5 Tips on Leadership

Last month, Howard Schultz, Starbucks’ director, gave an interview to The New York Times. What are the key ideas to remember?

The answer is obviously yes: most Facebook users are consumers, not businesses.

Just build a community of “friends” who will love your presence and listen to you. Here is a list of 10 factors of success on Facebook which might hopefully give you some inspiration.

1. Create a clean and concise page

2. Do not mix your business profile with your personal profile

Do not mix your hobbies and your friends with your corporate account. You’re not here to entertain yourself, but for marketing purpose.

3. Plan what to say

What do you want to achieve? How to get your target audience interestd in you? How will you respond to criticism and compliments? Plan a communication strategy which will ensure you build good customer relationships.

Reproduce the image from your website: logos, images, but do not overfill. Add contact so people can reach you.

5. Communicate and interact in a friendly manner

Join groups relating to your business. Provide tips and advice. Reply To those who ask questions.

6. Encourage your fans to talk .

For example, use surveys to ask whether they like or dislike your company. Start discussions on “Top 10 Ways to …” and asked them to share their ideas.

7. Tell your fans about your offers

Internet communities are supposed to be active. A good way to be active on Facebook is to offer discounts or special promotions. This will also bring new friends.

8. Stop selling

If your topics are limited exclusively to your products or services, people will find you uninteresting and you will grow weary very quickly.

9. Be regular and constant

Login daily if possible and write something. If you have nothing special to tell, then participate in discussions. If you are not present often enough, very likely people will forget you.

10. Learn to handle negative conversation

If someone is negative towards you, answer him courteously . People have the right to criticize. Be patient and answer them in a professional and friendly manner. You can not please everyone, but be sure to provide a positive image.

5 Steps for Success

To realize your dreams, you must meet the following conditions: a strong desire, a clear goal, high self confidence, positive thinking and persistence. These are the ingredients of true success!

If you follow the five steps below, you will certainly be successful!

1. Strong desire to succeed

It is not just a desire to get something, but a real passion for success. The passion is really the starting point and without it nothing can be achieved.

“In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure.”   — Bill Cosby

2. Specific goals

Without goals, you may dance around without ever touching it, the existence of a specific purpose will give you a purpose and the strength you need. A target shows you where to go and your desire takes you to the end. If you can visualize your dream, you have every chance of achieving it. The more concrete and detailed your goal is, the easier your path will be! The presence of goals gives you energy and brings you closer to your dream.

“Crystallize your goals. Make a plan for achieving them and set yourself a deadline. Then, with supreme confidence, determination and disregard for obstacles and other people’s criticisms carry out your plan” — Paul Meyer

3. Trust yourself

Become aware that you deserve to realize your dream, you have the desire and means to achieve it. You may have not known how to go about it but be aware that you will learn to succeed step by step.

“Trust yourself. Create the kind of self that you will be happy to live with all your life. Make the most of yourself by fanning the tiny, inner sparks of possibility into flames of achievement.”  — Golda Meir

4. Positive thinking

What would be another necessary condition for success, apart from passion, purpose and confidence? It’s undoubtedly positive attitude! The most beautiful dreams, deepest desires and most clear objectives do not take you anywhere without the attitude. If you’re the type to see everything in black and fear the worst, do not expect to have happiness. On the other side, if you show a positive attitude, the whole universe will become your partner and help you realize your dream.

“For myself I am an optimist – it does not seem to be much use being anything else”  – Winston Churchill

5. Do not forget persistence

It is also easy to start something as well as to abandon it. It is persistence that keeps you making constant progress. Have you ever experienced the joy of knowing an answer after years of hardworking? After all, no one can succeed over one night.

“A little more persistence, a little more effort, and what seemed hopeless failure may turn to glorious success.”  – Elbert Hubbard

Hope you will realize your dreams!

How to Customize Twenty Ten Theme

Twenty Ten is the default theme for wordpress 3.0 and above. It´s simple, fresh and quite elegant. I have tried many different themes and finally I decided Twenty Ten is the right one. However, Twenty Ten, like other wordpress themes, may need some customization to meet your personal needs. Here is what I have learned through trials and errors, hope it will save you some time.

Remove Page Title from Static Front Page in Twenty Ten

If you set a page like “Home” as the static front page, the page title still shows under the header, which makes the front page quiet unnatural. To remove the page title, the solution is simple, open Page Template (page.php) remove the the line,
<h2 class="entry-title"><?php the_title(); ?></h2>

Remove “posted on” and “by” in Twenty Ten

Go to your wordpress dashboard, click Appearance then Editor, you will find a list of templates on the right sidebar. Open Single Post (single.php), delete the code,

<div class="entry-meta">
<?php twentyten_posted_on(); ?>
</div><!-- .entry-meta -->

Then click the Update File button at the bottom. By doing this you will remove “posted on” and “by” on your single post. If you want to remove “posted on” and “by” on the blog homepage and category section, then open loop.php, find the the following code,

<div>
<?php twentyten_posted_on(); ?>
</div><!-- .entry-meta -->
<?php if ( is_archive() || is_search() ) : // Only display excerpts for archives and search. ?>

Delete these lines:

<div>
<?php twentyten_posted_on(); ?>
</div><!-- .entry-meta -->

Click Update File button and check out the changes of your blog.

Increase the Sidebar Width of Twenty Ten

The default sidebar width of Twenty Ten is 240 pixels, which is a little bit narrow for many bloggers. If you want to widen your sidebar from 240 pixels to 260 pixels like this blog, it’s pretty simple. Click Appearance then Editor, open the Stylesheet(style.css), find the following code,

#container {
float: left;
margin: 0 -240px 0 0;
width: 100%;
}
#content {
margin: 0 280px 0 20px;
}
#primary,
#secondary {
float: right;
overflow: hidden;
width: 220px;
}

Change it to,

#container {
float: left;
margin: 0 -260px 0 0;
width: 97%;
}
#content {
margin: 0 280px 0 20px;
}
#primary,
#secondary {
float: right;
overflow: hidden;
width: 260px;
}

Click Update File button then you are done.

Change the Post Font Style of Twenty Ten

Open the Stylesheet(style.css), find the following code,

body,
input,
textarea,
.page-title span,
.pingback a.url {
font-family: Georgia, "Bitstream Charter", serif;
}

Replace “Georgia, “Bitstream Charter”, serif;” with the font family you like. Then save the changes by clicking Update File button.

Change the Font Size of the Widget Titles in Twenty Ten

If you feel the default font size of the widget titles is too small, you can change it in the Stylesheet too. Open the Stylesheet find the following code,

.widget-title {
color: #222;
font-weight: bold;
}

Add the font size you desire, for example,

.widget-title {
color: #222;
font-weight: bold;
font-size: 17px;
}

If you want to change the font size of the entries under widget titles as well, then find,

.widget-area a:visited {
text-decoration: none;
}

Add the font size like,

.widget-area a:visited {
text-decoration: none;
font-size: 15px;
}

How to Make Money Blogging

Blogging is not a new thing in today’s information age. If you google some keywords, at least more than a half search results come from blogs. Millions of bloggers  publish tons of articles every single hour. But some successful bloggers make 500 dollars a day when most bloggers simply get less than 10 visitors a day and make nothing out of their blogs. If you consider seriously to make some extra money from blogging or make a decent living from blogs, you need to know the exact steps how to create a successful money making blog.

Step One: Find a Profitable Subject or Niche for Your Blog

Most people create blogs to record their daily lives. Can you make money out of this type of blogs? The answer is highly impossible. You must choose a profitable subject and focus on it. But how can you tell a subject or niche is profitable or not? It is simpler than you think, just go to Google Keyword Tool and search your subject keywords. In your Search results there will be Estimated Avg. CPC, Advertiser Competition and Approx Avg. Search Volume.  The Estimated Avg. CPC means the estimated average cost per click of the relevant Adwords ads, the Advertiser Competition means the intensity of the advertisers’ competition, and the Approx Avg. Search Volume tells you the monthly average number of searches for the keywords. If you want make serious money from blogging, choose the subject with higher Estimated Avg. CPC, intense advertiser competition and high search volume. In addition, it is better if you choose a subject or niche that you are familiar with or have passions for, it will be more fun to enjoy what you are blogging about.

Step Two: Choose a Domain Name for Your Blog and Host It

Ok, now you have chosen the subject for your blog, the next thing to do is to buy a domain name. Your blog will have a potential higher search engine ranking if you include your blog subject keywords in the domain name. For example, in case you have decided to blogging about “make money blogging”, you may want to choose a domain name like www.makemoneyblogging.com or www.makemoneybloggingtips.com. You can go to Instant Domain Search to check the domain availability. Most likely you will find that the ideal domain names for your future blog have already been taken. Don’t worry. For example you can add “the”, “your” in the front of your ideal domain or “central”, “journal”, “mag”, “magazine” to the end of it and see if it is available. The cost of a top level domain per year is about 7 dollars, you can buy it from Godaddy or Namecheap. Webhosting for blogs won’t cost you much money either. There are a bunch of companies provide hosting for blogs, among which are Godaddy, Bluehost, JustHost, Hostmonster, Dreamhost, Media Temple and Laughing Squid. Personally I recommend Godaddy for domain registry and webhosting.

Besides self-hosted blogging there are some blogging platforms available, Blogger, WordPress, Tumblr for example. If you are serious about making money blogging, just forget about the blogging platforms, they have many restrictions and you are not able to customize your blog as you like in most cases.

Step Three: Set Up Your Blog

WordPress is the most popular free open source to build blogs nowadays. You can customize your blog to your personal need with thousands of themes and plugins. Most webhosting companies support automatic wordpress installation, with a few clicks your wordpress blog will be installed. Then you can choose your favorite theme for you blog and add some necessary plugins. From my personal experience, the must install plugins are Akismet, Revision Control, Category Order, Ultimate Google Analytics, All in One SEO Pack and DB Cache Reloaded. Do not add too many plugins, they will slow down your blog.

Step Four: Writing Posts on Your Blog

You have a fresh blog now and you are on the bright road to make money blogging. Google will index your blog two or three days after it comes online. You can google site:yourdomainname.com to see whether Google has indexed your blog and how many pages have been indexed. Ok, all you need to do now is to keep writing posts on the subject and update your blog on a regular basis. In order to attract more traffic, use Google Adword Tool to find the long tail keywords relating to your subject. For example, if your subject is “make money blogging”, you might found there are many people search “how to make money blogging”,  “make easy money blogging” and “make money blogging fast” , then you can write posts titled “how to make money blogging”,  “make easy money blogging” and “make money blogging fast” with the exact long tail keywords dispersed in the articles.

Step Five: Promote Your Blog

The main way to promote your blog is building incoming links. Of course if other people find your blog is very useful they probably will link to you voluntarily. Besides writing quality content to attract incoming links, you need to build incoming links yourself.  Here are some major ways to build incoming links:

  • Submit your blog to as many the social bookmarking websites as possible
  • Write to article directories like Hubpages and Ezine Articles with a link to your blog at the end
  • Create free blogs at Blogger and WordPress.com then write some brief articles with a link to your blog
  • Comment on other peoples’ blogs
  • Create signatures at the end of any posts you make to internet forums
  • Ask other bloggers or webmasters for reciprocal links

Step Six: Make Money Blogging

Finally we come to this step: make money blogging. There are many ways to monetize your blog. The first choice is to put advertising on your blog, which is the most common and easiest way of making money.  The advertising you can put on your blog include, Google Adsense Program Ads (Ads by Google), which pay you based on clicking on ads by visitors to your blog,  Affiliate Programs ads, which pay you a commission when people buy a product after clicking your referring link, or banner ads that pay on the base of impressions shown.

Google Adsense is the chief source of income for most bloggers. You may as well use a combination of these different forms of advertising. Here is a basic list of widely used advertising programs,

  • Google Adsense: Contextual ads based on clicking on ads by visitors to your blog
  • Clickbank: Affiliate program sales model which pays a commission based on the value of the sale.
  • DoubleClick: Another widely used affiliate program by bloggers. Double Click is owned by Google
  • Commission Junction: One of the leading affiliate marketing companies on the internet
  • Amazon: I bet you know this one. Now you can make a commission by referring people to buy products on it.

How Much Money Can I Make

Hard to say.  With my own experience I can assure you that if your blog have 600 visitors a day, you will get at least 30 dollar from Google Adsense only.

Good Luck!

Make Money Building Websites for Small Businesses

If you look around there are thousands of small businesses in your local area. Most of these small business owners have little, if none, knowledge about building websites and online marketing, still they are eager to have a presence on the internet. If you have some website building skills, then you can make money quite easily by helping them build and promote websites. Ok, here I mean some website building skills, you don’t have to be an expert on it, some basic skills would suffice. Most websites of small businesses are pretty simple, some of which only have several pages.

A piece of advice: Don’t provide website building service alone, offer a service package including website building and maintenance, SEO, search engine marketing, video marketing, social networking sites marketing.

Small local businesses are easy to reach. Use the following ways,

  • Yellow Pages: there are yellow pages online as well as printed version.
  • Google Maps: an easy way to find local businesses, you can search companies within specific area.
  • Door to Door Visits: Walk to find them yourself, ask them if they need your service. It is hard work, but it works.

Once you have a list of small local businesses, call them first to see if they already have a website. In case they already have websites, then ask how do they feel about the websites and the online promotion. Tell them how you can do to help get more orders from the internet. If they show some interest in the conversation, make an appointment with them and your chances to make a good deal is quite big now.

You can also make clients reach you by launching a website to promote your website building and online marketing service. Then people who need such service will find you through search engines results. Make sure your website looks professional to make them feel they can trust you. Don’t forget to demonstrate some of your successful cases and add testimonials from your clients.
